State Trading Organization (STO) is set to officially launch its bunkering services in the Maldives, with the service scheduled for Thursday.

The first ship to receive this service "YC Barrier", travels between Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.

Currently, YC Barrier receives its fuel supply from Colombo due to the lack of low supply fuel available in the Maldives.

The vessel, which requires 200 tons of fuel per month, has a capacity of 1,100 containers.

According to STO, the company has begun accepting bookings for international bunkering services. An official from STO said that the launch and expansion of this service will significantly bolster the market.

Additionally, STO has brought two bunkering vessels to the Maldives, each with a capacity of 3,200 tonnes of fuel.

STO signed with Netherland's Vitol on March 13 to implement the Maldives Economic Gateway International Bunkering Facility.

More than 300 new ships sail daily near Ihavandippolhu, north Maldives the government said.
