Around MVR 90 million have been allocated for the state budget of 2023 to fund the presidential election to be held next year.
In the budget submitted to the parliament on Monday, MVR 500,000 was allocated for council elections while MVR 1.5 million was alloted for Women's Development Committee elections.
The government had decided to allocate MVR 90 million for the presidential election when Election's Commission (EC) had stated they would require MVR 95 million to have one round of voting. If a second round of voting is required, EC had predicted they would need a total of MVR 120 million to fund the election.
EC had expressed concerns regarding the obstacles they face due to the low budgets they are allocated each year.
Political parties have already started preparing for the presidential election.
Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have handed the presidential ticket to former President Abdulla Yameen when ruling party of the current coalition administration Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) is working towards holding a primary election within the party to elect a presidential candidate.
