Parliament's Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq submitted request for a copy Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's letter to Mauritian Prime Minister regarding Chagos Islands and maritime boundary dispute.

The MP's letter to parliament on Monday, October 31 said that Maldives had agreed to Mauritius' sovereign rights on Chagos Islands territory through President Solih's letter to Mauritius PM. The MP said this compliance had come at a time when the two countries were locked in a boundary demarcation case at International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). Morever, MP Thoriq highlighted Maldives Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath's confirmation of President's letter to Mauritian Prime Minister.

The lawmaker in his letter, claims the Maldives switching its decades old stance over Chagos Archipelago, would result in it losing parts of its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), which in accordance to Article 3 of Maldives Constitution will be changed.

Thoriq has requested for a copy of President Solih's letter to be submitted to the relevant parliament committee for evaluation. He sent the letter to Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Mauritius filed the delimitation of maritime boundary case at ITLOS on December 18, 2019 to resolve overlap of the exclusive economic zones (EEZs) between the country and Maldives.

While Maldives continued to maintain its stand, claiming it was an easily resolvable matter, the country further alleged Mauritius filed the case at ITLOS to gain sovereign rights of Chagos Archipelago.
