The Maldivian Parliament passes a budget of MVR 93 million for the Auditor General's Office (AGO).

The budget submitted to the parliament by their Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday was passed with the affirming vote of 44 out of the 77 parliamentarians that had attended the session.

AGO had proposed a budget of MVR 95 million for their estimated expenses in 2023. However, the Public Accounts Committee had decided to deduct MVR 1.7 million from the proposed budget.

The most severely deducted portions of the budget presented by the AGO include staff training expenses, cost of running the office and travel expenses.

According to the Public Accounts Committee's report, MVR 61 million has been set for current and capital expenditures in 2023 while MVR 32 million was set for investment programs.

In terms of recurring expenditure and capital expenditure, the budget presented by the AGO had stated they required MVR 62.7 million. However, since Finance Ministry had said the highest this could be at was MVR 57 million, Public Accounts Committee had reduced the amount of MVR 61 million after discussing the issue with AGO.

According to the report, the Finance Ministry has no objection to the allocation of the amount decided by the Public Accounts Committee.

They had also noted in their report that Finance Ministry had no issues with the higher amount they had proposed.

The audit office has proposed MVR 32 million as part of their public sector investment programme as they estimate that amount will be required for the construction of its new building.

Comparatively, AGO's budget that was approved for 2022 was MVR 90 million. Capital and recurrent expenditures had amounted to MVR 60 million. Public Accounts had said AGO had spent around MVR 36.5 million until September of this year.

While MVR 30 million had been earmarked as public sector investment programme for 2022, the office has spent MVR 20 million till September.
