While the party's membership has reached the legal requirement, former Minister Maleeh Jamaal, who is leading the efforts in the formation of People's National Front (PNF), said its registration would be officially submitted after the release of former President Abdulla Yameen.

The new party in formation, was founded by the former president after his exit from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to supposed rifts intensifying between him and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Yameen's son, Zain Abdulla Yameen is acting as the chairman and founder of the new party, which received Elections Commission (EC)'s nod of approval on November 29.

Although its top brass affirmed PNF would be submitted for registration within a week from the date of EC's consent, the process still remains pending.

In response to queries from Mihaaru News, Maleeh confirmed verifying the membership forms, adding the party already received more than the legally required minimum amount.

Maleeh said the party needs Yameen's presence necessary for its pre-inauguration meeting, due to which his release is necessary.

The former minister expressed hope of submitting over 4,000 membership forms, and said that at least one from each island across Maldives have shown interest to sign up for the new party.

"We don't wish to be hasty in our efforts to register the party. We have supporters in the PPM/PNC assembly's primary, and we do not want our efforts to cast a shadow on the primary. They would later on join our party," Maleeh said.

Besides Maleeh, Yameen's legal representative and former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel is the other key figure leading the efforts to form the new party.

Earlier, Jameel said that the leadership of PPM/PNC coalition had abandoned the former president.
