Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has last night described Sunday's controversial Bank of Maldives (BML) decision as an attempted financial coup, and called for the resignation of the bank's CEO Karl Stumke.
In a party hub meeting of ruling People's National Congress (PNC) held last night, Shiyam said the country woke up on Sunday morning to a coup attempt orchestrated by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party together with BML.
He said that at the moment when 'the national back took the public by their throats', MDP had held a press conference, adding that this could not have been a coincidence.
"To talk about the bank's decision, that cannot have been a coincidence," he said.
"This is a planned, calculated attempt to conduct a coup d'etat."
Shiyam called for BML CEO Karl Stumke to hand in his resignation.
The Minister then said that in making this attempt, the opposition had been unaware that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is a smart, courageous leader who will act in the interests of the people.
He asserted that President Muizzu would never make any decisions to the detriment of citizens.
Police also released a statement last night that they have commenced investigations into the alleged coup.
