Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid announced plans to enter into an agreement that would allow Maldivians to visit Turkey without obtaining a VISA prior to the visit.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğluis currently in the Maldives on an official visit at the invitation of Shahid.

Speaking at a ceremony on Sunday held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to sign five agreements with the Turkish government, Shahid said that at the moment, Maldivians are allowed to obtain e-VISAs prior to entering Turkey.

"The Turkish government has agreed to this, and [with this] Maldivians will be able to travel to Turkey without a visa," Shahid said.

Agreements were signed today with Turkey in the areas of trade, agriculture, the environment, foreign service and heritage.

While trade relations between The Maldives and Turkey are strengthening, Turkey is currently home to a large number of Maldivians.

The Turkish Foreign Minister arrived in the Maldives on the invitation of Shahid on Friday. This is the first visit by a Foreign Minister of Turkey to the Maldives since the establishment of diplomatic relations with the nation.
