Man accused of being an accomplice in the assassination attempt of Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has been released from police custody.

Ahmed Fathih from Laamu Gan, was arrested on May 20 in Baa Dharavandhoo. He is accused of aiding the men that attacked Nasheed on May 6, flee the scene immediately afterwards.

Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has previously said they lack enough evidence to prosecute Fathih.

Police has confirmed to Mihaaru news that they have released Fathih as the Prosecutor General had decided to not press charges.

Fathih had previously worked in Police Intelligence. He resigned from his post in the police on his own, and had worked as a cabin crew member for a short period of time as well.

Shameem has previously stated that the state has the legal right to monitor Fathih's activities if he is released to the public.

The attack on Nasheed took nearly two weeks prior to Fathih's arrest, on May 6. Nasheed is currently in the United Kingdom getting medical attention for injuries he received that day.
