Opposition coalition presidential candidate and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to provide a special pension for seasoned employees in an administration of the opposition.

Speaking during a campaign trip to Baa atoll Kendhoo, Hinnavaru MP Solih stated that protecting the rights of employees are of utmost importance to the opposition coalition, consisting of main opposition MDP, Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP) and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction.

MDP parliamentary group leader Solih stated that the decision came in consideration of fishermen and agricultural workers.

Solih also travelled to Baa atoll Dharavandhoo as part of his nine island campaign visit across Baa atoll.

Speaking at Dharavandhoo, Solih stated that the MDP manifesto envisions developing and upholding island values and lifestyles throughout the archipelago.

“This island [Dharavandhoo] is a perception of the MDP vision. The island evinces that developments can be made across the archipelago without crowding a majority of the population in a single island." said MP Solih.

The opposition coalition presidential candidate further highlighted that developments in the tourism sector for Dharavandhoo had been hindered due to failure by the President Yameen's administration to establish water supply and sewerage systems in the island.

A total of 263,000 eligible voters in the voter’s registry publicised by EC for the upcoming election slated for September 24.

In addition to MP Solih, President Yameen of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives, former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer and former Vice President of Local Government Authority (LGA) Shujau Hussein are all contesting in the run for presidency in the upcoming elections.
