Dharumavantha Hospital, operational for the past four years, now supersedes Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) as the primary government hospital.
In a conversation with Mihaaru, CEO Ibrahim Haleem highlighted that Dharumavantha Hospital, constructed by the Maldivian government on its own initiative, embodies the nation's patriotism. He described it as an honour that the country has established its own hospital as the nation's main medical facility.
He expressed the sentiment that designating the hospital with the country's language is a significant acknowledgment, posing the question, "Isn't Dharumavantha one of our own names? Isn't it a boon for each of us to declare our own hospital as the main one for our government while endeavors are underway to uplift our nation?"
IGMH was constructed with funding from the Government of India and operational for 30 years. However, due to increasing constraints on space, deterioration of the building's infrastructure and necessity for frequent repairs, former President Abdulla Yameen established the newere Dharumavantha Hospital during his tenure.
Haleem revealed plans for additional hospitals in the Malé area in the near future, asserting the convenience of designating Dharumavantha Hospital as the primary healthcare facility among the four in the area. He emphasized that Dharumavantha Hospital is already established as the main hospital.
Despite the construction of the 25-storey Dharumavantha Hospital during former President Yameen's administration, IGMH continued to be considered as the main hospital in the capital city.
IGMH was named in honour of India's third Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.
The government intends to address the deteriorating condition of IGMH in the near future. The plan involves constructing a new tower near Dharumavantha, relocating specific departments from IGMH to the new facility, and subsequently renovating the original hospital.
