A Latvian man has been arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives by ingesting them.
The Maldives Police Service said on Tuesday that the 46-year-old man was arrested with the assistance of Maldives Immigration, based on intelligence reports they received.
The police are currently trying to retrieve the drugs from his body. The type of drug he was attempting to smuggle, and how much is not yet known.
In such circumstances, the police have previously taken the culprits to the hospital to retrieve the drugs, or they keep them in guesthouses until they pass the drugs naturally.
Earlier this month, over MVR 1.5 million worth of cocaine was found in the luggage of a 23-year-old woman travelling to the Maldives from Doha, Qatar. The authorities were criticised for deporting the woman instead of arresting her.
