Man pleads guilty to stealing a shaver was fined MVR 8,600 on Sunday.

Ahmed Zameer pleads guilty to committing this crime in September 8, 2018. He has confessed that he stole a pink shaver from a shop.

Zameer confessed to the crime on trial.

He had said he was the eldest in his family and it falls within his responsibility to look after his elderly mother. Instead of giving him a jail sentence, he had requested for a fine.

The punishment for the crime is a jail sentence of two months and 12 days. If a person pleads guilty, their sentence can be reduced to one month and 24 days.

He had said he works a job that provides him with Rf. 600 per day. If he is given a fine, he says he can pay it. He added that he would only be able to continue working if he is fined as well.

As per Zameer’s request, Judge Mohamed Misbaah who was conducting the trial, sentenced Zameer to pay a fine of MVR 8,600.

As this crime cannot be considered as a felony but rather a misdemeanor, the judge had used the his prerogative to give Zameer a fine than to sentence him to jail. His verdict also stated the decision was based also made after weighing the financial burden the state would have to carry if Zameer was jailed and the fact that jailing him appeared counterproductive to ensuring he would stay away from crime.
