Internal elections of ruling People's National Congress (PNC) have commenced today. The election will see persons elected to over 1900 posts.

A PNC Official said that the election started at 10:00 hrs this morning, with voting open till 14:00 hrs.
Posts up for election include constituency presidents and vice presidents, and leaders for various initiatives the party will be running across the atolls. If the MP for a constituency is a PNC member, then they are automatically granted constituency presidency.
Steering committees will also be elected today, as well as youth branch president and women's branch president. These will be elected from each island, and city, making a total of 420 posts.
The party said that in total, 1984 posts are up for election across 91 islands. Previously, the number was at 2095, but some positions were granted without an election.
At present, PNC's membership is at 62,000. Of these, 34,900 are eligible to vote in today's election.
PNC Election Committee President, Health Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel has previously said that this would prove to be the largest internal election held by a political party.
