Individuals aged 65 and above, as well as those facing medical emergencies, can now visit the immigration offices in person to apply for passports.

"As of today, individuals facing medical emergencies and those aged 65 and above who plan to travel abroad can visit immigration if they choose to submit their passport applications in person," a statement released by Maldives Immigration reads.

Individuals applying for a passport in the event of a medical emergency can now receive immediate service around the clock.

The process is made even more convenient, as Immigration authorities will arrange the taking of passport photographs as well.

Individuals aged 65 and above can utilize the service between 08:30hrs and 17:00hrs.

Addressing concerns about the online application process in an earlier press conference, Controller of Immigration Mohamed Shaman Waheed stated at the time that an alternative to online applications will be found for the elderly and others who found the online process inconvenient.

During the Covid 19 pandemic, the government modified the procedure for online passport and ID card applications, requiring email submissions of applications and online payments. While the intention was to provide convenience for the public, these efforts gave rise to complaints from the elderly and some other demographics of the population regarding difficulty in access to the services.
