Maldives Immigration, on Wednesday, announced that after July 23, the administration would be accepting applications for Maldivian passports solely through its digital portal 'IMUGA'.

In a previous announcement, Immigration also noted the discontinuation of email applications for the service.

Email applications for services were initially adopted by the authority following the closure of public offices in March, at which time the first imported case of COVID-19 was discovered in the country.

According to spokesperson Mifthah Mohamed, 'IMUGA' will assist users with digital payments as well as text-based notifications to indicate when passports are ready for collection.

Additionally, he said Immigration is yet to decide on reverting their digital-only policy, following a return to normalcy after the pandemic.

After the city-wide lockdown was imposed on April 15, Immigration faced considerable difficulties in providing services and has since introduced several measures to address these difficulties.

In May, Immigration decided to extend deadlines on visa extension requests and delayed imposing late fees for visa-related payments.

Furthermore, work visa applicants were permitted to forgo the submission of medical reports and arrangements were made to enable foreigners in Maldives to renew their passports online.
