Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has announced today that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has decided to increase the donation from Maldives to the UN Fund for Palestine to USD 50,000.

Every year, the Maldives has been donating USD 5000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Zameer announced this this morning at the inauguration of the 'Palestine aa eku' [With Palestine] telethon organized by State media PSM.

"The State has always contributed to this fund over the past years. As such, every year, as symbolic aid, USD 5000 has been donated. However, following the attacks by Israel since October 7 last year, the President has decided this year's donation will be raised to USD 50,000. That is, ten times the amount that was being donated earlier," Zameer said.

Zameer said that the funds raised through this telethon would be handed over to the UNRWA via the Foreign Ministry and the Maldives Monetary Authority under the supervision of the ministry.

An independent auditor has been appointed to monitor that all the funds received in the telethon are duly handed over to UNRWA, the Minister said.

"Crowe Maldives LLP has taken responsibility for this work. Once they complete the audit, we will hand it over to the UNRWA under our supervision through the Ministry, and once they have received it, we will notify the public."

The telethon commenced at 08:00 hrs this morning and will proceed until midnight.
