Attorney General (AG) Ibrahim Riffath has said that he will propose an amendment to the Judiciary Act to allow judges to retire within a certain period even if they are not 65 years old.

The Judiciary Act currently provides for voluntary retirement at the age of 55. However, the government's amendment to Parliament proposed to raise the age to 65 years.

In a tweet on September 1, AG Riffath said that even if the new amendment is passed, he will propose a bill to allow voluntary retirement for judges under the age of 65 within a certain period and an additional living allowance for judges who do not have their own premises.

His tweet also said, if judges do not have their own housing in the island they are living in, they will be able to participate in flat or land allocation schemes.

However, only the Parliament has the power to allocate salaries and allowances of judges.
