Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalitions’ presidential candidate and Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Friday evening, August 25, announced his policies to resolve parking issues in the Malé region.

While speaking at the ceremony held on Friday evening to open a campaign hub of the coalition, Dr. Muizzu spoke about his efforts as Malé City Mayor to address the insufficient parking spaces in the Malé area.

He said that despite the efforts of the Malé City Council to secure investors and formulate a strategy for constructing six parking facilities in Malé and Hulhumalé, the existing government did not grant approval for this initiative.

“[People] have no option besides parking on the roads and beg for garage permits because the government did not permit us [to develop parking structures],” Dr. Muizzu said.

Dr. Muizzu guaranteed a lasting resolution to the challenges associated with parking if he is elected as president. He asserted that citizens would no longer have to seek garage permits, as parking spaces would be readily available. The candidate from the PPM/PNC coalition asserted that vehicles will be allocated parking slots from these parking structures, which will be classified and officially registered as garages.

“That [slot] will be reserved for one vehicle, and no one will come to claim it,” Dr. Muizzu added.

He also announced to permit motorcycle parking within these buildings, aiming to decrease the number of parked and unused vehicles on the roads.

Dr. Muizzu urged the public to exercise careful consideration when casting their votes in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for September 9. He asked whether the voters would opt for a government that has already demonstrated its capabilities or choose an administration and wait for progress once again.

“I am ready. If elected, you would see me working sincerely. I have been actively engaged with the people since my council election,” Dr. Muizzu said.

“You would see that same image in the future as well. I wont shy away from the public, I would visit the public and listen to them if elected. We will run a people’s democracy.”
