The leaders of the Maldivian security forces assured the public on Wednesday that they would uphold the decision of the people in the recent presidential election.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)'s Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam, told local media Mihaaru that the people's decision is very clear.

"The president has accepted the result of the election as well," said Major Shiyan.

This statement came amidst many rising public sentiments calling on MNDF and Maldives Police Service to uphold the election results.

In addition, Acting Commissioner of Police Abdulla Nawaz also confirmed to the media that the police respect the choice made by the majority of Maldivians and that they would strive to uphold it.

Meanwhile, rumours recently arose that the outgoing ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has submitted a request to the Election Commission (EC) to delay the formal announcement of election results, fueling talks of possible attempts by the party to overrule the victory of opposition coalition president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

However, the ruling party refuted the allegation in a press conference Wednesday night.

As per the constitution, the results of the Presidential Election must be announced within seven days of the poll.

Incumbent President Yameen lost the election to his opponent from the opposition coalition Ibrahim Mohamed Solih by more than 38,000 votes in the presidential elections held on September 23, 2018.
