Maldives Police Service on Saturday countered claims made by former President Mohamed Nasheed that there were Maldivian insurgents, who fought in the civil wars of Syria and Iraq, currently amongst the police and military.

In an interview to The Times of India newspaper earlier the same day, Nasheed had claimed that the Maldives contributed the most number of fighters to Syria and Iraq per capita.

Regarding the insurgents, he said, “…there’s a network that can recruit people to go and fight in foreign land. And while they have been coming back since ISIS got flushed out in Iraq and Syria, they have embedded themselves in strategic places within our military, police, customs and immigration. Therefore, there is a state within a state.”

In response, the police released a press statement denying the allegations.

Asserting that Maldives Police Service provides equal protection to the public, the statement declared that Nasheed’s allegation “has no basis in truth and was made for [his] own benefit and to create misconceptions and mistrust” of the police force.

Requesting all entities to refrain from disseminating false and malicious rumours regarding the institution, the police also warned that legal action would be taken against perpetrators.
