Sermons in schools; activities to focus on Islam and nationalism: Government

The government has decided to enforce policies at school that heeds national guidelines and Islamic ethics to foster a generation educated on the the values of culture and religion.

The government has decided to enforce policies that ascertain school activities are centered around Islam and Dhivehi nationalism.

Public Policy Secretary of Presidential Office Abdulla Azim, said in a press release that the Social Council has decided to enforce policies disciplining school activities to be mindful of the Maldivian culture and Islamic guidelines.

These policies include: - Beginning each school session with the national anthem - Assemblies to include revisions of the latest progressions of the country in a manner that emphasizes the importance of Islam and nationalism - Calendar the important national dates of the country to make a timetable and organize a method to mark them in a manner that emphasizes Islam and nationalism - Schools to run practical activities that prioritize the Dhivehi language - Islamic and Education Ministry to cooperate to provide scholarly lectures to students on required topics

Moreover, with the implementation of Islamic policies and Nationalism guidelines for school activities, Islamic Ministry has also initiated an 'Islamee Risaalathu' program that aims to build a generation that is knowledgeable on the main pillars of Islam.

This program is aimed at the students aged 4-18, teachers and all members of the community to educate the country on the Islamic faith. Incorporating important lessons on prayer, Zakat, fasting, Hajj, pilgrimage and faith, these sermons are carried out in local mosques with important information being delivered to media programs, forums and social media to educate the public.

The Education Ministry has also announced the inclusion of a new subject in the school curriculum, ‘Nationalism’, to be taught from the next academic year.

The changes being brought along with the new school year will be enforced once the ongoing academic year is concluded in April. The 2024 new academic year will commence on May 26.
