The Hulhumalé Magistrate Court has remanded the man who was arrested on Friday in connection with obstructing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's motorcade.

The individual arrested on Friday was opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) activist Mohamed Abbas. The party confirmed on Saturday that the court had remanded him in custody for five days.

With this arrest, a total of five people are currently in custody for obstructing the President's motorcade on Monday night.

Of the four individuals who were initially arrested for the incident, two were remanded for five days, while the other two were remanded for 15 days. The police said that a woman was also arrested and that she was remanded for five days.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), as well as the parliament's Committee on National Security Services, have launched investigations into the incident to see if there was any negligence from the security forces.

The MNDF has even suspended the Commander of the Presidential Guards, Colonel Abdullah Ibrahim, after the incident.

Late on Monday night, when President Solih was returning from Hulhumalé, protesters near the PPM office on Boduthakurfaanu Magu in Malé blocked the road by sitting in the middle of it and prevented the President's motorcade from moving forward.

The motorcade was at a standstill for nearly 15 minutes, with protestors and motorcycles surrounding it. Eventually, the president's car turned around and took a different route to leave the scene.

This is the first time that a high-security presidential motorcade was obstructed by the public.
