Maldives Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed receives a warm welcome upon his arrival at Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
Several of his supporters came out to the streets to welcome Nasheed's arrival, as he had visited the island after a significant time.
Nasheed flew to the island to partake in the closing ceremony of a training program for divers.
This also marks Nasheed's first trip to a local atoll after announcing his decision to run at MDP's primary elections to decide the party's presidential candidate in 2023. A source close to Nasheed had earlier confirmed with local media outlet "Mihaaru" that the Parliament Speaker will officially launch his campaign efforts from Thinadhoo.
Meanwhile, a campaign group dubbed "Anni Primary" is currently attempting to confirm pledges of members to Nasheed.
The party has yet to announce a formal date for its primary, while it was recently confirmed incumbent Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be contending as well. Though Nasheed and Solih are childhood friends, their political divisiveness have become more apparent in recent months.
Moreover, the ruling party is split with one faction backing Nasheed while the other endorsing Solih. The infighting became intense during the party's chairperson election; which ended with Solih endorsed candidate, Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail emerging the victor after defeating Nasheed endorsed candidate Imthiyaz Fahmy.
