President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday nominated Fathuhulla Jameel, former Director General of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), and Ismail Nashid, Assistant Commissioner at Maldives Customs Service, to the post of Commissioner General of Taxation.

Following the submission to the parliament, the names were sent to the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs for further evaluation.

The second amendment to the Tax Administration Act, ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on September 12, stipulates that the Commissioner General of Taxation must be appointed within 30 days of the amendment coming into effect. This deadline expired last Saturday.

Five names for the position of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation were also submitted to the parliament on Monday. They are Mohamed Siraj Muneer, Asma Shafeeu, Ismail Saajid, Ahmed Shareef, Ahmed Waafir and Hamdhee Ageel.

A number of changes were brought to the Tax Administration Act including the reestablishment of the board of MIRA with the Commissioner General of Taxation gaining a seat as a non-voting member.

As per the new law, Commissioner General of Taxation shall remain in office for a term of five years after appointment. The last person to fill this position was Yazeed Mohamed, with Hassan Zareer as Deputy Commissioner.
