Elect-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday called on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom urging him not to oppose the people's decision and give way to national unrest, during the final days of his term.
During a joint press meeting held amongst former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom at The Maumoon Foundation, Solih pointed out that President Yameen was suddenly changing his mind, after having publicly conceded defeat after noting wishes to 'step back' as a responsible opposition representative.
Solih described the various allegations made at the Election Commission and its members by the president and ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) an attempt to foster unrest within the country.
Declaring the actions to be unacceptable, Solih implored President Yameen with requests against leading any attempts to disrupt the peace.
"The people are not going to give way for this. The people have decided. The people want to move forward with their decision. We are saying that he should not lead efforts to spur unrest. Neither we nor the people, are we willing to give way for such circumstances," said the President-Elect.
Solih believes that President Yameen should step down and peacefully give way for the transitioning process. He also noted that it is unacceptable that President Yameen is appointing people to positions.
Furthermore, the coalitions Presidential candidate assured citizens that he would not make any illegal "deals" with President Yameen.
Answering a question posed by a member of the press, Solih insistent that he would not give way for President Yameen to escape peacefully by agreeing to an underhanded deal.
Stating firmly his intent to not make any moves that could be deemed unconstitutional, Solih said that should a case concerning illegal actions be reported, it is mandatory that the relevant institutions investigate the .matter
President-Elect Solih noted the opposition by the Maumoon faction for his win in the election and expressed his gratitude towards Maumoon during the press meeting.
