While there cannot be a definitive list of best travel destinations from across the globe given the choices will vary from one publication to the other. However, based on popular trends, polls and mutual rankings a list of top global travel destinations has been curated out.

There is no doubt that the rankings will change from time to time and it is inevitable that the popularity of these destinations will continue to change throughout; some will make the cut and others will not.

Here are the top destinations according to two major publications from the United States; the US News and Far & Wide. But take in the list with a pinch of salt since these rankings may not be how you would place them – and that is okay!

Maldives - For Sparkling Beaches

Maldives, a picturesque island country, is one of the popular places for best trips in January. The assemblage of charming islands, crystal blue sea, sparkling beaches, and lofty reefs make a holiday in Maldives during the winter month fascinating and alluring. January is an ideal time to visit Maldives as one can enjoy the most enthralling water sports.

The curated list from US News and Far & Wide did count a total of 30 destinations on which Maldives was ranked twelfth on both.

Glacier National Park, Montana

The dream of every outdoors traveler, this spot is regarded as the “crown jewel” of Montana, USA. The most defining feature of the park is of course as the name suggests, the glaciers which provide a spectacular panoramic view of the vista while the untouched lakes add into the effect of natural beauty at its finest.

Visitors to the park can reside at the town of Whitefish nearby – regarded as one of the best small towns in America. Interestingly, the park is also home to some mountain goats which you may witness during your trekking.

Tokyo, Japan

Bustling, busy and baffling! The Japanese capital is often cited as one of the most exciting cities in the world. Neon lights, fast-paced and the constant rush hour. This description might make you wonder if the city really is a tourist attraction or not, but it is!

Apart from being a busy city with neon-underlit Supras and heavily modified Toyotas, it is also the city of temples and cherry blossoms – as well as exquisite delicacies. Food is love and food is life and Tokyo has that up for offer by the dozens or even more!

Between the months of March and April or September and November happen to be the best times to visit the city when the temperatures are at their best – and come Spring, the cherry blossoms bloom to their full delight.

Phuket, Thailand

Luxurious but affordable rhymes well with Phuket. Situated in southern Thailand and just an hour’s trip via flight away from Bangkok, nestled beautifully in the Andaman sea is the pristine slip home to white sandy beaches.

Known for sunset points, photo-op locations and a massive alabaster statue known as Big Buddha are among the major reasons why travelers flock to Phuket.

Phuket is the most pleasing between November and April when the weather is at its finest as well as in the most ideal condition for beach activities – also mind you it is “poo-ket” or “poo-get.”

Rome, Italy

What is it that they say? Rome was not built in a day? Well that is good since one built in haste is often not a sight to admire or revere. The historic significance of this city is one thing, but the changes along the time is another.

Luxurious hotels, storefronts among other tourist-centric avenues beautifully erected in a city that is also home to iconic structures like the Pantheon or the ever so famous Colosseum. And the art? Yes, the art! Why visit Rome if you won’t stop by to admire the beautiful sculptures and art left by famous artists such as Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Bernini and Raphael.

Rome is also home to several Michelin-starred restaurants so curbing your hunger or delighting your taste buds with fine cuisine will not be an issue after all. The best time to visit Rome is between October and April when the city experiences cooler temperatures, thinner crowds and also better rates on hotels.

London, England

London is known for many things, but you might be slightly surprised here seeing the city making the cut as a popular tourist or travel destination. But it should not veer you off actually since this city is “alive” and ready to provide you with an experience of a lifetime.

Live performances of Shakespeare, world-class museums like the National Gallery or the place where you will eventually wind up to take a few photos just so you can tell your family that you have been to England – Buckingham Palace. Please do not disturb those guards, though this might be a plea said in vain!

London is not London without its famous pubs and during your visit you might find yourself paying a few visits to these spots.

Tahiti, French Polynesia

Phil Coulson (The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) said “Tahiti, it’s a magical place!” and even a fictional character is right on that note. French cuisine, top-tier resorts, warm waters and a serene location. True, Tahiti may bear significantly on your bank account but it is worth it!

Split into two regions and connected by a land bridge, Tahiti Nui is the larger region and home to the island’s capital Papeete as well as the surfing hotspot Papenoo Beach. The smaller region, Tahiti Iti provides seclusion with bright white sands of La Plage de Maui – perfect for beach dwellers looking to kick back a little!

Best time to visit is between May and October, which coincides with Tahiti’s winter when it is less humid with less rainfall.

Maui, Hawaii

You would have seen a lot of Hawaii on TV. Hollywood movies love to pick Hawaii as one of its top favorites whenever a movie is about rest, relaxation and vacationing. But where to head in Hawaii? Maui of course. Maui has five regions including the popular West Maui and South Maui which are known for several attractions and beaches – Wailea Beach for instance. Road to Hana at East Maui is another popular travel zone and the Upcountry which will take you to the world’s largest dormant volcano – the Haleakala!

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Measuring a little more than 2 miles wide and 6 miles long, Bora Bora is a peak of pristine beauty. The turquoise lagoons and the beaches are what will set you in.

Popular activities to engage in while you are at Bora Bora include hiking or booking a 4x4 tour of Mount Otemanu which is part of an extinct volcano rising 2,400 above the lagoon. Or if you wish to get your feet wet then snorkeling along the Coral Gardens would be perfect for you which is home to some reef sharks, eels and stingrays.

Visiting Bora Bora between December and March would be ideal if you do not wish to expend heavily during your visit.

Paris, France

First thing that comes to your mind when someone says Paris – Eiffel Tower of course! The city has everything you are looking for. From rich cuisine to iconic landmarks and centuries of history packed within its streets, buildings and attractions.

Other popular tourist spots include the Musee d’Orsay while the city is home to 20 diverse neighborhoods called arrondissements. Hip restaurants, charming squares, cafes and exotic bars – Paris has it all! Summer is the best time for anyone to visit Paris when the weather is the most ideal.

South Island, New Zealand

The larger yet less populated out of the two islands that make up New Zealand is home to some breathtaking scenery.

Activities one can indulge in include a 33.5-mile hike on Milford Sound which is limited to 90 people at a time and is regarded as one of the world’s best treks. You can make stops at Lake Te Anau, suspension bridges, a mountain pass and also the tallest waterfall in the country, the Sutherland Falls along your trekking.

Autumn is the most ideal time for you to visit the South Island when the temperature is optimum and the island itself is not overcrowded with zealous tourists. Additionally, the rates during this period are also considerably better.
