Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Thursday announced that 2,194 tested positive for COVID-19.
HPA has been working to clear a backlog of samples collected, and as such, out of the samples that tested positive today, only 691 cases were positive from those collected within the past 24 hours.
With this, the number of active cases currently in Maldives is 50,802, the highest this figure has ever been to date.
Meanwhile, 759 people made full recoveries, bringing the total figure to 30,403 to date.
HPA revealed that of the new cases, 1,698 were from the greater Male’ region while 467 cases were from residential islands and 29 from operational resorts.
Currently, Maldives is in its worst COVID wave with record-breaking number of daily cases.
To curb the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Maldives, HPA has strengthened the restrictive measures. This includes increasing curfew hours and extending the curfew duration as well.
On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 165.9 million people and claimed over 3.43 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 146 million people have recovered.
