A man paralyzed from the waist down in a diving accident was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of drug trafficking.

Ahmed Suhail, 26 from Haa Dhaal Atoll Makunudhoo island was charged with trafficking after he was arrested with two boxes packed with drugs late last month.

Suhail had reportedly collected the boxes which came from a boat. Police had stopped the suspect and searched the boxes to find 103 small bags packed with drugs.

The island's magistrate court found him guilty of the charges after Suhail refused to identify the source of the drugs.

Local residents have long accused Suhail of drug trafficking even after he suffered the diving accident.

Suhail had been accused of delivering drugs hidden inside his wheel chair.
