Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has stated that the crocodile found in the uninhabited island of Farukolhu in Shaviyani Atoll will be released at a distance far enough away that it cannot return back into Maldivian waters.

Picnic-goers who visited the uninhabited island of Farukolhu in Shaviyani Atoll made the alarming discovery yesterday when they came across the 10 foot long crocodile on the island's beach.

With assistance from the police, they caught the crocodile. The police then handed over the crocodile into the care of the MNDF.

An MNDF official said today that similar to previous occasions when crocodiles were spotted in Maldives' waters, the crocodile will be released in to the seas at a safe distance based on tides and currents judged to be sufficient to discourage it from returning back into local waters.

Footage circulating on social media show picnic-goers as they discover and first attempt to catch the crocodile.
