The former president of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Kumaratunga, on Monday welcomed the recent pact signed by former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed, and opposition leaders Qasim Ibrahim and Imran Abdulla to work jointly against the current government of the Maldives.

A statement released by Chandrika’s office read that she approves of the opposition’s pact to strengthen democratic policies and ensure basic rights in the Maldives. She stressed that political parties and civil institutions must work to ensure justice and the rights of the people in countries where political tensions are high.

Chandrika also expressed hopes that the administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will offer their cooperation in fortifying democracy and provision of basic rights to the people of the Maldives.

Meanwhile, Former President Nasheed is currently in Sri Lanka while Former President Maumoon is on a personal trip to India.

The opposition pact signed by political leaders against the government marks the first time that Maumoon has formed a coalition with his former arch rival, main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
