The Canadian government, in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO), granted Maldives USD 1.08 million to support combating COVID-19 and medical waste management.

A virtual ceremony was held to hand over the funds and officially inaugurated the 'Disinfection of Medical Waste' project.

During the ceremony, Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem expressed gratitude towards the Canadian government and WHO for their assistance.

The project is being carried out as a collaboration between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Canadian government.

Under the 'Disinfections of Medical Waste' project, the medical waste management processes of health centres in the atolls will be enhanced.

Additionally, medical waste management services will be established in 10 atolls without such facilities as part of this project.

Health Minister noted that it was essential to get rid of medical waste in a safe manner in order to protect against COVID-19.

In addition to the minister, Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Maldives David Mckinnon, and Acting WHO Representative to Maldives Dr Shushil Dev Pant took part in the ceremony.
