Maldives Correctional Service has said that Hashim Abu Bakr has been transferred to house arrest because it is not possible to provide medical care in prison in accordance with the doctors' instructions.
Hashim, of Haa Alif Hoarafushi, is serving a sentence for being convicted of child sexual abuse while in a position of trust. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison on November 11, 2022.
There are concerns being shared on social media that Hashim has been granted leniencies in his sentence.
In response to this, Maldives Correctional Service released a statement where they said that Hashim had been suffering from spine injuries even when he was convicted. Doctors had advised that the necessary surgery cannot be conducted in-country, hence Hashim was granted a permit on August 5, 2024, to go abroad for surgery, the statement reads.
They said that Hashim had returned to Maldives after treatment on September 16, 2024.
However, as aftercare recommended by doctors cannot be provided in prison, he is temporarily serving his sentence under house arrest, they said.
They assured that he is being monitored even though he remains in house arrest for the time being.
