President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has praised the people of Addu City for always being at the forefront of the development of Maldives and being a vital part of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
"I remember the sacrifices made by the people of Addu City when this party came into existence. Today, the people of Addu are with this party as well," the President said on his campaign trip to Addu City on Friday evening.
The President reiterated that the MDP would not survive without the people of Addu City.
"Addu City has the highest number of voters in a single constituency and from a single island in the upcoming primary. This makes it very clear the relationship between Addu City, MDP and the reform movement," he said
The President said that Addu City should be the first place initiating positive change in Maldives.
"There is no development in this country without the development of Addu City, the people here have a very broad range of political thinking and development thinking. Addu is the main hub of forward thinkers," he said.
President Solih said the development plan of Addu City was formulated by the people of the city. He said that the plan is being implemented in Addu City just as he had said at the last rally of the 2018 presidential campaign.
"As [Mayor] Nizar just said, 100 kilometers of road is being constructed in the city. Unlike before, with drainage system and pavements included. This is the biggest development plan in Addu City after the Link Road," President said.
He said that land is being reclaimed in the city and tourism is being promoted. The technical evaluation of the Gan International Airport's upgradation has been completed and is now in the final evaluation stage. The work will be handed over to a company soon, he added.
The President said the harbor development of three separate islands in Addu City have been completed, and establishing water and sewerage systems are nearing completion. With that, the electricity grid in the city is being completely changed, he said.
"Now, the people of Addu can talk about development. Previous governments have tried to implement projects in the name of constructing water and sewerage systems. What happened then? How many years did we have to spend on that?,” he said, criticising the MDP presidential primary opponent former President Mohamed Nasheed.
The President said such things happen when people try to initiate things suddenly without a plan. MDP’s primary election is scheduled to be held on January 28.
