Addu Police lacks resources, issue unresolved

Addu City Council said that Home Ministry has not resolved any of the issues faced by Addu Police Station.

The council said it has been a month since they had informed the ministry of how the police station is lacking in funds.

Following a stabbing incident in Addu Hithadhoo on September 17, Addu City Council held an emergency meeting where they said they had informed Home Ministry of the shortcomings Addu Police faced on August 4.

Home Ministry had responded on August 22. According to Addu City Council, they said they would resolve the issue.

Deputy Mayor of Addu Ibrahim Shuahu had told Mihaaru news that they have not received any updates from the ministry since then.

"It is difficult to serve the public with the limited vehicles and officers we have, specially with the increase in crime," he said.

Addu has a population of over 34,000. Shuau said they have met high ranking officers of Maldives Police Service on multiple ocassions and discussed the difficulties Addu Police faces n dealing with the inceasing social issues the city faces.

Home Ministry has not said anything on this issue so far.

The stabbing on September 17 had injured two people; one person had received severe injuries.

Later that same evening a 23 year old woman and a 27 year old man was attacked while travelling on a motorcycle.

Several people have been arrested in connection to both these cases.so
