Tourism Ministry has decided to not hold the tourism day celebrations in Addu this year.
World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27 every year.
When the surge in COVID-19 cases appeared to be controlled earlier this year, Tourism Ministry had decided they would hold the Tourism Day celebrations in the southernmost atoll of the nation. Activities spanning a week was to be held in Addu, starting from September 27.
However, considering that the COVID cases in Addu have spiked, Tourism Minister have made the decision to cancel the celebrations in Addu. According to the ministry, the day will not be celebrated this year as colourfully as in previous years.
As the ministry has planned to introduce new things on that day, some activities will be held in Male' instead.
While over a thousand people have been confirmed to have gotten COVID-19 in Addu, there are 308 active cases in the atoll at the moment.
