According to the President's Office, the award recognizes Dr Zahir's outstanding contribution to developing education in the Maldives and educating its people.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has decided to confer the highest Civilian Award, the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (ODRI), to Dr Mohamed Zahir Hussain, in recognition of his distinguished service and contributions to the education sector in Maldives.
Dr Zahir currently serves as Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).
According to the President's Office, the award recognizes Dr Zahir's outstanding contribution to developing education in the Maldives and educating its people.
During his tenure as Education Minister, Dr Zahir significantly advanced the Maldives' education system in its early stages. He oversaw the Basic Education Programme launched by then-President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, introduced community schools across various islands, and established the foundation of atoll educational centres.
Dr Zahir has also been instrumental in promoting modern education in the Maldives and previously served as Chancellor of the Maldives National University. Beyond education, he held the post of Youth and Sports Minister, where he contributed significantly to developing that sector.
Dr Zahir will be conferred with the honour at the official function to mark this year’s Republic Day. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 20:15 hrs at Dharubaaruge tomorrow.
The President’s National Award for Special Achievement will also be presented during the Republic Day ceremony.
This year, 40 individuals selected by the Special Awards Committee will receive the President’s National Award for Special Achievement, while 53 others will be honored with awards for their service to the state.
