The opposition coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) will hold elections in October to establish Steering Committees on every island.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, PPM's Vice President and the head of the coalition's election department, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, stated that the purpose of the committees is to strengthen opposition activities in all islands across the country.

"As a responsible, competitive opposition, PPM/PNC will elect committees to operate the coalition along with steering committees, in order to hold the government accountable and strengthen our activities", said the former housing minister.

The opposition coalition will hold the first round of elections on October 16 to elect members to the committees.

A second poll will be held at a later date to elect presidents to the committees.

The opposition will open applications to run for the steering committees within a week.

According to the coalition, the number of members on the committees will be seven, nine or 11, proportionate to the population size of the respective island.

Additionally, the committee will allocate seats for women and youth. Any local woman aged 18 and above is eligible to run for the women's slot, while individuals between the ages of 18 to 35 are eligible for the youth slot.

Dr Muizzu described the committees as the "PPM/PNC army that will stabilise the nation".

Stating that the coalition has commenced preparations for the elections, Dr Muizzu added that more details on the steering committees will be revealed soon.
