Indian Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Bipin Rawat arrived in Maldives on Sunday on an official visit.

Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal received Bipin at Velana International Airport upon his arrival.

Spokesperson of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Major Ibrahim Azim disclosed that Bipin will meet with various top officials of the military in addition to ministers during the visit set to conclude next Friday.

Moreover, Bipin will pay a courtesy call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Bipin, who leads one of the strongest militaries in the world, is also scheduled to visit MNDF's Nothern Area Headquarters at Maafilaafushi, Lhaviyani Atoll, during this period.

Bipin was appointed at India's Army Chief on December 31, 2016, following the retirement of General Dalbir Singh Suhag who previously filled the post.

Diplomatic relations between Maldives and India improved significantly after President Solih was sworn into office last November. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Maldives twice in President Solih's administration.
