Discussions were held between the Maldivian government and ICESCO to discuss the possibility of adding Maldivian coral stone mosques to the organisation's permanent world heritage list.
Discussions have been held to include Maldives' coral stone mosques in the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO)'s heritage list, announced Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage today.
In a statement released by the ministry today, it was announced that important discussions were held between Cultural Minister Adam Naseer Ibrahim and ICESCO's Director General Dr. Salim M. AlMalik to potentially include the mosques in the organisation's permanent heritage list.
The meeting was held in Baku, Azerbaijan during Minister Adam Naseer's trip to the country to participate in the 'Shusha - Cultural Capital of the Islamic World 2024'. The meeting was also attended by high level officials of ICESCO.
One of the main objectives of the Minister's visit includes working towards the inclusion of the country's coral stone mosques on the ICESCO list, the ministry said.
During the meeting, ICESCO's Director General Dr. Salim M. AlMalik expressed intentions to explore the necessary steps required to fulfil this initiative.
The invitation for this trip was extended by Minister of Culture Chair of the National Commission of Azerbaijan for ICESCO Adil Karimli.
The inclusion of mosques and other buildings on the ICESCO's heritage list is overlooked by its subsidiary, Islamic World Heritage Committee.
During its recent meeting held from 18th-19th December 2023 in Rabat, Morocco, the committee added 213 places and artefacts to the list, bringing up the total of the list to 634. However, some of these are yet to be added to the permanent list, which includes both material and non-material items.
