Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been announced as the People's National Congress (PNC) presidential candidate with 25 votes in favor.

The decision was reached during a secret ballot at the PNC's council meeting held this evening.

PNC, which is the coalition partner for Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), was given the presidential ticket in a secret ballot at the party's council meeting held this evening.

Adam Shareef, the Maduvvari MP, also contested the election and received 23 votes. A total of 48 members participated in the voting.

PNC made the decision to field a presidential candidate in response to the situation where Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate, former President Abdulla Yameen, was deemed ineligible to contest the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for September 9. The Election Commission rejected Yameen's candidacy form, and the case has been taken to the Supreme Court, with the first hearing scheduled for tomorrow at 3 pm.

PNC leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated that if former President Abdulla Yameen is released by the Supreme Court, they will withdraw from contending in the presidential election.

Dr. Muizzu, who secured the PNC presidential ticket, formally joined the party today to contest the election.

PPM/PNC leadership had asked Yameen three times to suggest candidates for presidential candidate and running mate, but he left the decision to PNC.
