Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has responded to former President Abdulla Yameen's verbal attacks on Speaker of Parliament and Faisal's father Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

Faisal said that Abdul Raheem had diligently worked alongside Yameen for twenty years, and said that at that time, Yameen had had no reservations about Abdul Raheem's educational status.

"My father spent 20 years in political slavery to Yameen, working without ever tiring or complaining. This nation will attest to that. At that time, my father's education was not a matter of concern for you," Faisal said at Yameen in a Facebook post last night.

Faisal maintains that Yameen had lost the 2018 Presidential Elections due to having distanced himself from then Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) leadership, including Abdul Raheem. He went on to allege that Yameen himself had plotted ahead to orchestrate the failure of PPM parliament members in the 2019 parliamentary elections.

At the time, many held left PPM, but his father had remained loyal and patiently took on his shoulders the burdens of the situation, Faisal said.

"When the Criminal Court sentenced you [Yameen] to five years in prison, it was my father who worked 24/7 to maintain the political activities of both parties [PPM and PNC (People's National Congress)]."

Faisal questioned if Yameen had any recollection of the praise he had made of Abdul Raheem on Yameen's release from the Vodumula conviction, asking "Did you hand over the management of that major coalition then to someone who has no education, no experience? At the time, he was perfect, wasn't he?"

According to Faisal, it was now opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who had been behind cancelling Yameen's candidacy in the most recent presidential election. He alleged that MDP had done this as payback for their candidate former President Mohamed Nasheed's candidacy having been voided for the 2018 presidential elections during Yameen's administration.

He claims that Yameen had planned to not have an alternative candidate run from PPM with the deceptive intention of giving MDP a second administration.

"It is a fact that you could not comprehend that your leadership had failed the moment you planned to leave the opposition on the streets solely because you couldn't stomach another person gaining what you had lost," Faisal said.

Faisal praised the perseverance of his father and President Muizzu, without which the opposition would still remain on the streets, according to him.

He criticized Yameen for currently working closely with politicians who had earlier 'plotted to erase him from the face of the world'.

"While you [Yameen] are worried that me and my father are uneducated, why don't you go ahead and show us a single way in which your better educated children have served the country?"
