The government has decided to increase bus frequency and replace large buses operating in Male' City with mini buses suited for the city's compact streets.

Bus transportation across Male' City and Hulhumale presently utilize large double decker buses, which has caused heavy traffic congestion on the streets and hindered ease of travel to drivers.

The 'Male' Fahi' program introduced by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation last night in a bid to address the dense population in Male' City had introduced several schemes aimed at tackling traffic congestion in the city streets.

The decision to replace buses currently operating in Male' and Hulhumale' with mini buses adapted for the city streets and increasing bus route frequency was also reached under this initiative.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) had shipped 36 buses into the country in order to begin RTL (Raajje Transport Link) bus transportation services in the Male' region. Twelve of these 36 buses are operated in Male' and are equipped with the capacity to board 20 passengers along with the space to accommodate wheelchairs.

Bus schedules were altered to provide 24 hour transport services last year. Double decker buses are also used for these travels, which has a seating capacity of 90 passengers while the remaining buses accommodate up to 30 passengers at a time.

While many residents had opted for bus transportation following its introduction in 2022, bus travelers are gradually declining due to irregular bus schedules.
