Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, on Wednesday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health regarding the handover of outdoor gym equipment for five islands.

Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof and Health Minister Abdulla Ameen signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.

The equipment, donated by World Health Organisation (WHO), will be transferred to Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll, Thimarafushi in Thaa Atoll, Milandhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Filladhoo in Haa Alif Atoll, and Rasdhoo in Alif Alif Atoll.

Outdoor gyms will be established under Health Protection Agency (HPA)'s "25 to 25" campaign to increase awareness regarding healthy lifestyles.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, Minister Ameen stated that approximately 80 percent of deaths were a result of non-communicable diseases. He described the establishment of outdoor gyms as an important step in alleviating this problem.

In his speech, Minister Mahloof revealed that the sports ministry planned to establish outdoor gym facilities in 63 islands and that efforts were underway.

The sports minister added that discussions were being conducted with island councils to finalise arrangements.

Minister Mahloof also expressed gratitude to WHO for their generous donation.
