Police arrest Sri Lankan national over MVR 1.9 million theft

Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Sunday arrested a foreign national over stealing MVR 1.9 million from KSJ Overseas.

Police confirmed that a 27-year old Sri Lankan national was arrested over the matter.

According to police, the Sri Lankan man came to capital Malé from an undisclosed resort, to collect the money meant for staff salaries. The amount was to be taken back to the resort for KSJ Overseas' employees undertaking an outsourced project in the resort.

In addition to the MVR 1.9 million, the police reported that the Sri Lankan man had stolen a wireless router with a data card worth MVR 25,000, five mobile phones each worth MVR 11,000 and phone recharge cards with MVR 29,500.

Authorities confirmed that they successfully recovered MVR 1.5 million of the stolen money on Sunday, along with some of the goods stolen.

He remains in police custody for investigations, under a 15-day remand issued by the Criminal Court.
