Newly appointed United States Ambassador to the Maldives Alaina Teplitz presented her diplomatic credentials on Sunday, to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Teplitz met with the president following the ceremony held at the President's office to present her credentials, to discuss matters of strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Shahid was also present at the ceremony.

This is the first diplomatic credentials presented to President Solih since his recent inauguration on Saturday.

Teplitz was sworn in as US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives on October 22. Previously, she had served as the Ambassador to Nepal.

The post of Ambassador to Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives was formerly held by Atul Keshap since his appointment in August 2015.

Keshap is noted for his open criticism of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, over the policies implemented by his administration as well as regarding human rights issues and various other causes of concern.

Teplitz has been a career member of the Senior Foreign Service since she joined the State Department as Minister-Counselor in 1991. She served previously in U.S missions to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other Asian countries.
