The government has provided funds for an organization to build a viewing platform at the protected area, 'Paree Fen'gandu', a freshwater pond in Laamu atoll Gan.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ibrahim Thoriq visited Paree Fengan'du yesterday during his ongoing trip to the atoll.

The Minister said that a grant under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) had been provided to Maldives Heritage Society to build a viewing platform at the protected area.

In the ceremony held at Laamu Atoll Funadhoo to hand over the grant, development of two other protected areas in the atoll were also assigned. These are the protected lake area in Maabaidhoo and the protected mangrove in Hithadhoo.

Environment Ministry said that under these grants issued yesterday, each island has been allocated free aid of MVR 2 million which is to be used to implement the management plans formulated for the protected areas.

At the ceremony, Minister Thoriq described the grants as an opportunity to make best use of the protected areas, and emphasized that proper use of the grants could lead to similar opportunities in the future.

Six areas in Laamu atoll, including these three, were designated as protected areas in December 2021.

Under this UNDP grant, the government also signed an MoU last week to renovate the nature parks in Addu and Fuvahmulah.
