The remand in custody of one person out of the two arrested in relation to the crime networks being conducted via Telegram channels has been extended by a further 15 days.

The extension was handed out against the 39 year old woman, wife of the 28 year old man who is the second arrestee in the case.

Illegal activities that the channels were involved in include drug dealing, money laundering and prostitution.

In the remand extension hearing held on Friday, the woman claimed in court that she has a job, and hence requested the investigation be expedited.

Police Investigation Officer, however, responded that a definitive date for the conclusion of the investigation cannot be estimated.

The telegram groups and channels being run by these two individuals were Jazeera Admin, Jazeera Girls, Jazeera Escort Gallery, Jazeera Scam Alert, and Jazeera Link News.

Amongst the illegal activities carried out via these channels, police listed the sale of hashish, prostitution, sale of forged medical certificates, as well as sale of alcohol.

A taxi driver found to have aided and abetted crimes committed by those running these telegram channels and groups was also arrested earlier this month.

When Police seized the channels, which were established in 2023, there were over 7000 subscribers, including both Maldivians and foreigners.
