Some of the properties allocated by the former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration in Hulhumale' Phase 2 are encroaching on the roads itselves, stated the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) today, adding that such plots can only be handed over after realigning the land plots in a way that doesn't overlap on public property.
Under the "Binveriyaa" scheme initiated by the previous government, land was allocated in Hulhumale' Phase 2, newly dredged Hulhumale' Phase 3, Gulhi Falhu, and Giraavaru Falhu. The government decided to allocate 9,000 plots of land from these locations.
In a video released by HDC today, Mohamed Siraj, HDC's Public Relations Assistant Manager, stated that the process of handing over land to the beneficiaries is underway, and construction of the perimeter walls for some plots has also commenced.
However, Siraj noted that there are obstacles to handing over some of the land plots allocated from Hulhumale'. Some of the land plots allocated under the Binveriyaa scheme overlaps on electricity, water, and sewerage infrastructure networks, he said.
"Some of the land allocated in this area encroaches on the street. Such places have to be relocated. There is no way to allocate the plots unless the streets and alleys in this area are arranged in an appropriate manner," he said.
Some of the plots overlap on the water and sewerage service lines. While a lot of the land allocated has encroached on the water and sewerage network, the network should be relocated before the plots can be given, he said.
A video of the area showed the property line on one of the plots overlapping on the network.
"We are in talks with the State Electric Company (STELCO) and Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) for relocation. It will be very difficult to release plots allotted from the area unless the service lines are changed in a planned manner so that public services connected to the network are not affected," he said.
Siraj said that some of the plots were allocated from areas filled with sand and granite mounds, as well as locations where construction materials had been deposited. Plots can be allocated after emptying these areas, he added.
"I assure you that we will remove the obstacles encountered in allocating the land and hand it over to the beneficiaries," Siraj said.
Earlier, HDC Managing Director Fazul Rasheed criticized the previous government for allocating the land without any planning. However, he stated that according to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, all the land will be released to deserving individuals without reducing even an inch of land.
Under the previous government's housing scheme aimed at addressing housing issues in Male', a total of 8,394 people have been granted land registry so far.
