10 arrested for alcohol possession, mid-trip on speedboat

Police has intercepted a speedboat travelling to a nearby uninhabited island, in which alcohol and possibly drugs were found. Ten were arrested at the scene for possession, with one more being placed under arrest for obstruction of police duties.

Ten individuals have been arrested after they were found traveling to a deserted island with contraband on board a launch mainly operated in Meemu atoll Mulah.

The police disclosed today that this operation was initiated on Monday following information attained by Police Intelligence that an intoxicated crew carrying illegal substances on a launch generally operated in Mulah is advancing to a deserted island.

They had further revealed that these ten individuals were apprehended on the waters near Meemu atoll Hakuraahuraa amid this operation launched in cooperation with the Muli Police Station, Kolhufushi Police Station and Police Intelligence.

During the inspection of the seacraft, their possessions and body searches, the Police revealed that 15 packets of cellophane believed to contain drugs alongside narcotics sealed inside bottles were discovered. They had further stated that 35 bottles of alcohol were also seized from the seacraft.

While ten individuals were apprehended during this impounding, the authorities had shared that an additional person was apprehended under charges of impeding police duty amid the launch inspection and arrest procedures.

All individuals arrested during this drug operation were between the ages of 22 to 33. While some arrestees were released from custody following their remand hearing at the Muli Magistrate Court, others were ruled to be held in remand in custody for a period of three to four days.

The number of detainees presently held in custody however, remains unclear.

Police has assured they are further investigating the case.
