Thailand has announced quarantine free entry to visitors arriving to Thailand on the tourist VISA.

The change was made after a month of strict travel measures by Thailand in response to the new dominant Covid variant, Omicron.

However, the non-quarantine option is available only to those that have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The new policy states that travellers to Thailand will be required to test for Covid while they are in the airport. An additional Covid test is required on the fifth day of entry into the country.

Thailand has also extended the service time of restaurants. Restaurants will now be open until 11 p.m. instead of 9 p.m.

Thailand made the change in order to restore tourism in the country, which has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, Thailand was one of the most popular destinations in the Asia region. An average of 40 million tourists used to travel to Thailand annually prior to the pandemic. Thailand has recorded 2.3 million positive cases and 22,000 deaths over the past two years. Two-thirds of the country's population have now completed the Covid vaccine.

Prior to the pandemic, Thailand was a popular destination amongst Maldivian travellers as well.
